Glory Bee!
What better way for a beekeeper to start the day, than to open her conservatory doors to glorious sunshine, & an azure blue sky all a-buzz with swarming bees!
I donned my cap so they didn’t get caught in my hair, & flung my doors open, like an excited child!
It does feel like a great event to be among swarming bees, a feeling of excitement and adventure. The bees have packed as much nectar into their tummies as they can, and taken flight to find a new home. I was keen to find out where they would settle, and catch them if I could…!
I followed them down to the bottom of my little garden, to where my hive cleaning equipment lay, and watched with awe and growing satisfaction, as they entered an empty brood box. Once the queen had gone inside, it became the hub of the swarming bees, who gradually followed her in. The air slowly cleared of Bees, and the great almighty hum grew softer & focused around the queen in her new home.
One local beekeeper had a very big grin on her face all day!
Bees often settle a while, while they send scouts out to find a better home, then take off again to their chosen site. This swarm had clearly already done their reckying and were here to stay, bright and early!
I left them until that evening to settle in, then put them into a better hive, and took them to my Great Longstone apiary. They seem to be settled and happy there!
